Crumlin Road Gaol Tour In Northern Ireland

My Family Visit To Crumlin Road Gaol In Northern Ireland

Crumlin Road Gaol is one of the tourist attraction in  Belfast, Northern Ireland.  Crumlin Road Gaol is a former prison and the only Victorian era prison remaining in Northern Ireland since 1996.

The prison was built between 1843 and 1845 and it was one of the most advanced prisons during those days.

The Holding cell

This photo was taken from one of the Crumlin Road Gaol Holding Cell.

This photo was taken at the museum while we are waiting for our tour guide. This is just right beside the entrance of the Cuffs Bar & Grill Restaurant.

There were Seventeen prisoners  executed in the prison.  This Execution Chamber is located  just right behind the toilet wall in which a legal execution is carried out.

Then bodies of the executed were buried inside the prison underground.  A coffin was position below.

The Crumlin Road Gaol  Experience

Crumlin Road Gaol is open seven days per week (except Christmas Day & New Year) and their first tour starts at 10:10am and their last tour at 4:30pm.

The tour will last about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Upon entering the first admittance room, you will experience what prison life was like to be during the old times.

You can experience the tunnel walk that is heading to the courthouse to Governors office, hospital, then to the execution hanging cell up to the graveyard – though we did not reach the graveyard part since we need to catch our flight.

This photo was taken at the tunnel heading to the courthouse and to the other wings of the prison.

How To Get To Crumlin Road Gaol

During our visit in Belfast, Northern Ireland on August 4 2017 there was no subways or trains available, either you will take a bus or taxi.

Luxury Rental Cars

The easiest way to go around Belfast is by Taxi. You can ask your hotel to book you a taxi and just tell them where you are heading.  Most hotels in Belfast and Tourist Attractions  have taxi phone that you can use for free.

This photo was taken inside the taxi from Clayton Hotel going to Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast Northern Ireland.

Once you finish your tour at Crumlin Road Gaol, you can find a taxi phone just right beside the ticket booth. You can use that phone to book a taxi to pick you up.

If you don’t know the address just tell the driver that you are at the Gaol (pronunciation as “jail”).  The taxi will arrive in about 2-5 minutes.

Take note that you cannot just stop a taxi on the road.

I hope this post helps you to make your visit to Crumlin Road Gaol in Northern Ireland a memorable and enjoyable one.
