Game Of Thrones Filming Locations, Places To Visit
Hey Guys!
Just want to share with you My Family Trip To The Game Of Thrones Filming Locations in Northern Ireland.
This is really a thumbs up to visit!
The Game of Thrones has attracted record viewership on HBO. It is filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland and elsewhere in the United Kingdom, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Spain, and the United States.
During our trip to the United Kingdom, my husband and I decided to take a side trip to Northern Ireland and one of our itineraries is to visit these beautiful places…
Game Of Thrones Filming Location
Stop1: The Carnlough Harbour
The Game of Thrones Filming Locations first stop is the Carnlough Harbour. Carnlough is well know for its charming and beautiful limestone harbour. The harbour was built out of limestone blocks.
Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark, was filmed swimming in Carnlough Harbour and walking up the steps.
It is a small beautiful harbour with an inner and outer basin; the inner basin is generally full of local boats. Excellent panoramic views over the village, the greens and ocean to Scotland
The Carnlough harbour is just few steps from the parking area where the tourist bus parked and the Londonderry Arms Hotel is also located near the harbour.
The Londonderry Arms hotel was built in 1848, as a coaching house by Marchioness, Winston Churchill owned the hotel from 1921 to 1924. This hotel was part of this beautiful village.

Stop2: The Cushendun Cave
This is the second stop of our tour. The Cushendun Cave is where Melisandre gave birth to a horrific demon shadow baby.
The Cushendun Caves were formed over 400 million of years of extreme weather conditions (source: visitbritain.com)
The Cushendun Cave is just few steps where our bus was parked. You can take a lovely walk beside the sea before hitting the Cushendun Cave.
The Cave is interesting to visit and very close to the town. This is a must to see when you visit Northern Ireland.

Stop3: The Dark Hedges
The Dark Hedges is so popular in Northern Ireland and this is one of the most photographed location in Northern Ireland that you shouldn’t miss.
These beautiful impressive trees lined with big twisted branches forming an arch over the road.
The Dark Hedges originated in eighteenth century.
The Stuart family planted the rows of beech trees designed to impress visitors as they approached the entrance to their mansion.

Stop4: The Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge
The Carrick-A-Rede Bridge is connected to the cliffs by a rope bridge across the Atlantic Ocean.
Suspended almost 100 ft (30 m) above sea level, the rope bridge was first erected by salmon fisherman 350 years ago.
It was a long nice walk from where our bus parked before hitting the bridge.
Crossing the bridge requires strong nerve especially if you are afraid of heights, but if you make it, this is really an amazing experience to see the stunning views across the island.
Just make sure to avoid looking down. As you can see on the above photo I was way way behind from my daughter (really so scared….), but it’s really worth to cross this astounding rope bridge.

Stop5: Giant Causeway
At the reception center, they will hand you a phone guide that will give you insights as you passes the area.
The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
The Giant’s Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea.
Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places. (source: Wikipedia)
These photos are taken on the way going to Giant Causeway. It’s quite a long walk. If you love walking then this is a good fit for you.
You can also have the option to take a ride from the reception center going down here.
How To Go To The Game Of Thrones Filming Locations
There are several day tour organised by tour companies but if you want to do the day trip at your own pace, renting a car is also a good option.
In our case, we just opted to join the guided tour available at the Clayton Hotel (this is where we are staying). The bus will pick up guests from different hotels (just a few minutes stop) then the bus usually leaves around 9:00am from Belfast and returns at approximately 6:00pm.
The driver is very nice, fun and he is also the tour guide.
A coach tour costs around £35 per person and covers the following areas:
- The Carnlough Harbour
- The Cushendun Cave
- The Dark Hedges
- The Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge
- The Giant Causeway
I hope this post helps you to make your Game Of Thrones Filming Location Tour in Northern Ireland a memorable and enjoyable one.
